Judge Nancy C. Atkins

Nancy Collins Atkins came to magistrateís court from a varied background, including extensive work in the media. She began her career as a newspaper reporter for The Spartanburg Herald-Journal while attending the University of South Carolina at Spartanburg. As a reporter and editor, she covered government, education and health issues.

Later, she was named Director of Public Relations at Upstate Carolina Medical Center in Gaffney where her responsibilities included writing and editing newsletter, press releases and coordinating the hospitalís volunteers. She left that position to do freelance graphics and marketing projects. In 1996, she began working with Spartanburg School District No. 7 on a contractual basis and later became Public Information Specialist for the school district. She left that position in June 2001.

Judge Atkins was elected to Spartanburg County School District 3 Board of Trustees in 1995 and re-elected four years later. She resigned when she was appointed as a magistrate. During her career in the media and in public relations, she received various awards and honors. As a school board member she attained Level 5 in the Boardsmanship Institute.

A lifelong Spartanburg County resident, Judge Atkins is a graduate of Cowpens High School. She was married to the late Allen Atkins.  She has four children and is a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Cowpens. In her spare time, she attends classes at Spartanburg Technical College and does free-lance graphics, writing, sewing and other projects.
